Kai was stuck in a huge, goofy grin as we walked through the hall. I grinned back. It was such a relief to have my gamble pay off, especially after Kai had such a hard morning.
"Wow! He was even better than I expected! How's that spark?" I asked.
Kai grinned harder.
"Roaring like a bonfire! I'm gonna prove I can be Top Half!"
That's my brother. I knew he'd be strong for the rest of the day, maybe even the week now. All he'd needed was some good inspiration.
I playfully shoved his shoulder. "That's the spirit! Here's your schedule." I handed him a paper with his schedule printed on it.
"We have the next class separate. Remember, you have a few weeks to fix your schedule. Play to your strengths. If you aren't in charge of it soon, you'll get demoted to Pawn."
"WHAT?! He yelped.
Ignoring Kai's shocked expression, I kissed the top of his head.
"I can't do everything for you, little

Nya made it to her place quickly because it was reserved right up front. I wasn't so lucky. The door to the classroom opened before I reached my desk in the back. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw Nobu tense as the teacher looked our way to see who wasn't in position.
The serpentine focused on me, oozing dissatisfaction.
He was a brand new teacher starting today, and the first Serpentine ever. His red eyes with multiple circles were mesmerizing even without him trying to hypnotize you. His eyes mercifully shifted off of me as he addressed the whole room.
"Good morning, class. I am Master Skales. I see that one of our number has arrived late and ill prepared."
I quickly jumped the last pace to my desk to stand at attention, heart pounding. It was not a good sign to be called out by the teacher so soon. I started to feel sick. This was exactly what I was afraid of when I tried to tell Nya why I couldn't get any

I wished I'd guilted Nya out of making me go. I hated going into class late. I would usually skip if I couldn't make it early, because late forced me to show everyone how small I was again.
Nya kept saying second smallest isn't the worst, but that's easy for her to say. She was third biggest in the school.
The very smallest kid had only been around one year, but when he came, it didn't change anything for me. Sharpshot had an air about him you don't mess with. Nobody has ever called him small to his face. In fact, he was so intimidating, everyone acted like he was normal size anyway. But I would be picked on for being small all the time.

Kai might have been small, but he did wear my arm out dangling off it. I let my arm drop, and he stumbled a bit from the awkward position he'd been in. As usual, he tried to act like he hadn't been clumsy. I rolled my eyes as he put his fists on his hips and glared expectantly. Kai would NEVER guilt me into telling him "the birds and the bees" until he was ready for it. Sadly, that would probably take a while.
I knew he wouldn't let it go unless I changed the subject.
"Look...I don't want to talk about it and YOU need to be focused on this class. This teacher is going to be great!"
I finished with enthusiasm, trying to help him catch the positive feeling I had about it. Before he could think of something to complain about, I hurried through the door of the school building, waving for him to come. The door was already swinging shut behind me when I realized he hadn't followed. I rushed back out to find him where I left him, looking down at the ground. Hi
